What to ask on an early learning centre tour

Choosing where your child will spend their early years is one of the biggest decisions you'll make as a parent, and a website can only tell you so much. A tour is where you find out what a centre is actually like. If you've been searching for questions to ask on a childcare tour, this guide covers the ones that matter most, and we'd genuinely encourage you to ask every one of them when you visit us at Senses ELC, or anywhere else you're considering.

Start with the people

The educators shape your child's day far beyond any facility or program, so ask who would be caring for your child, how long the team has been at the centre, and what happens when someone is away. High turnover is one of the clearest warning signs in early learning, because young children settle best with familiar faces. At Senses ELC, our team structure means families are greeted by educators they know, and our ratios go beyond the industry standard. Ask any centre you tour how their ratios compare to the requirement, and listen for a specific answer rather than a vague one.

Ask what a normal day looks like

Request a walk through an ordinary day, from drop off to pick up. How is the morning structured? When do children rest, and what happens for the ones who've outgrown a sleep? How does the centre balance planned learning with time to simply play? The answer tells you whether the day is built around children or around convenience. You can read how we structure the day for each age group on our Nursery, Toddler and Preschool program pages, and a tour is the best way to see it in motion.

Ask how children learn here

Every centre will tell you they have a curriculum. Ask what it looks like in practice. Who developed it, how is it delivered day to day, and how will you hear about what your child is learning? At Senses ELC, our exclusive Senses : Ignite curriculum was built around sensory exploration, guided by four principles of communication, creativity, critical thinking and collaboration. When you tour, ask to see the spaces where learning happens. Ours include a dedicated art studio, a science lab, a workshop and age-appropriate libraries, and we love showing them off.

Ask about the food

Food is a daily reality for your child, so dig into the detail. Is there a cook on site or are meals delivered? How many meals a day are included? How are allergies and cultural requirements handled, and can you see a current menu? At Senses ELC, our on-site chef prepares five meals fresh each day, built on seasonal whole foods, and the nutrition program was developed in consultation with a paediatric nutritionist. If a centre can't show you this week's menu on the spot, that's worth noting.

Ask about outdoor play

Ask how much time children spend outside each day, and what happens when it rains. Outdoor play builds physical confidence and gives children the space to take small, sensible risks. Our outdoor area at Milsons Point has a sports court, a water play arena, an edible garden, a sandpit and a cubby house, with a mix of undercover and open-air spaces so children play outside in any weather. Whichever centre you tour, ask to stand in the outdoor space for a few minutes and watch how it's used.

Ask about safety and quality ratings

Every Australian early learning service is assessed against the National Quality Standard, and you can check any centre's rating on the national register at ACECQA before you even book a tour. Ask when the centre was last assessed and what its rating is. Senses ELC is rated Exceeding, and we're happy to talk through what that means when you visit. Ask too about sign-in procedures, how the centre communicates during the day, and how incidents are reported to families.

Ask the practical questions

The everyday logistics decide whether a centre works for your family. Ask about opening hours, waitlists, what's included in the daily fee, and how orientation works for new families. We're open 7:30am to 6pm Monday to Friday, directly opposite Milsons Point station with co-located parking for drop off and pick up, and our daily fee includes nappies, meals and our full enrichment program. Our FAQ page answers the common ones, and a tour covers the rest.

Trust what you notice

Some of the most useful information on a tour is never spoken. Notice whether the children look absorbed in what they're doing. Notice how educators speak to them, whether they crouch to a child's level, whether the rooms feel calm. Notice how the centre smells at lunchtime. Your questions will get you the facts, and your senses will tell you the rest.
